After a very dense entry, I will try to make this one a bit lighter and broken up, with some more visuals and not so text heavy…but I thought you needed a proper introduction to the O’Campo family.
After helping me teach a few English classes to Eva’s kids (Micaela and Walter) as well as some of their cousins (Ivana and Ariel), Eva invited us to Micaela’s 11th birthday party. She was going to just throw a little get together in the late afternoon, have a few of Micaela’s friends over and eat some cake….and asked us to swing by. And swing by we did. I baked some cookies (which I used to spell her name) so that we didn’t show up empty handed!
We took some fun pictures. This one of her came out amazing. I didn’t take it, I allowed the kids to take the camera. It is always amazing when the kids take the pictures what they see…because 1) they see different things than we see 2) they have a totally different height perspective 3) the subject acts differently in front of their friends or peers instead of me. I honestly have had some really amazing results when I find children I can trust with my camera and who are interested in it….this is the one Micaela’s friend took of her.
Then it was cake time. Her mother, as a good mother, bought candles that kept relighting no matter how much she blew on them, simply to annoy her. And it worked. Then, just as Micaela was hitting the peak of her annoyance, her mother stuck her fingers in the very cake she had made, and smeared it down her daughters face. Resulting in a very loving mother daughter picture!
Then after her mother was done torturing her, her friends had their go at it….and made another cake in her hair!
Then it was time of the Timo show, as he danced to cumbia in his own special way to the perfect delight of all the kids attending the part. He had a very large and enthralled crowd.
And some really big fans!
Everyone had some good old wholesome, family, immigrant fun!
